Introduction

In HRM, United Way Halifax has provided strong program support in three “Action” neighbourhoods – Spryfield, Dartmouth North and Fairview.  As part of the Poverty Solutions research, thematic mapping showed two additional rural areas as having a higher than average number of people living with low income – HRM Rural East and Preston Area. Data was modelled for all five of these custom geographies and the UW 2016 Census Snapshot was prepared. In addition, a statistical highlights document was developed for each of the five neighbourhoods with comparisons to HRM. An introduction to each, with its link to the highlights document, is shown below.

Spryfield Highlights

Spryfield Outline smSpryfield, as defined for United Way’s Action for Neighbourhood Change, had a Census population of 11,700 in 2016. The outline shown to the right, and the boundaries chosen, are based on a combination of the geography of interest and the best fit for the Census based geography. This boundary was revised slightly in June 2017 following consultation with HRM Planning and Development and other local resources. Click here for the full pdf. Dartmouth North Highlights

The outline shown to the right, and the boundaries chosen, are based on a combination of the geography of interest and the best fit for the Census based geography. Fairview Highlights

Preston Area Highlights

Preston Outline smPreston Area had a Census population of 2,600 in 2016. The area includes North Preston, East Preston, Cherry Brook, Northern tip of Westphal, tiny bit of Lake Loon. The outline shown to the right, and the boundaries chosen were based on four census areas that had a higher than average rate of the population living in households with low after-tax income. HRM Rural East Highlights

Fairview Outline smHRM Rural East had a Census population of 9,200 in 2016. The area includes Part of Musquodoboit Harbour, Meaghers Grant, East Petpeswick, Middle Musquodoboit and all points east of these. The outline shown to the right, and the boundaries chosen were based on two census areas that had a higher than average rate of the population living in households with low after-tax income. Census Tracts (CTs) 2050153 and 2050154.04 were included. Click here for the full pdf.
